Mick Hellman is a Founder, Managing Partner and member of the Investment Committee. Prior to establishing HMI Capital, Mick spent most of his career at Hellman & Friedman, LLC where he was a Managing Director and a member of the Investment Committee. While at Hellman & Friedman, Mick founded the software and logistics (ports and container terminals) verticals and established the firm’s Hong Kong office. He was instrumental in Hellman & Friedman’s investments in Blackbaud, Hongkong International Terminals and Mitchell International. Prior to joining Hellman & Friedman in 1987, Mick worked as a Financial Analyst at Salomon Brothers in San Francisco in the Corporate Finance Department.
Currently, Mick is a trustee of the Rosenberg Foundation, the USA Cycling Development Foundation, and the Hellman Foundation. Mick currently serves as a Senior Advisor to Hellman & Friedman, LLC; is a member of the Board of Directors of Hall Capital Partners LLC; and Osterweis Capital Management. Prior board involvement includes LPL Financial Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: LPLA); Asia Alternatives Management LLC.; UC Berkeley Foundation; Blackbaud; Hongkong International Terminals; Mitchell International; Foxcroft School (Board Chair and Chair of the Investment Committee); and the Bay Area Discovery Museum.
Mick received a B.A. in Economics with High Distinction from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.B.A. with Distinction from Harvard Business School. Married for over 30 years, Mick and his wife have five grown daughters and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mick also performs drums and vocals with his daughters, sisters, nieces, nephews and aunt in several Americana bands, playing in Bay Area bars and nightclubs. In 2007, Mick also placed first in Individual Pursuit at the Masters World Track Cycling Championship for men ages 45-49.
Emily M. Brakebill is a Founding Partner, Head of Investor Relations, COO and CCO at HMI since inception. Prior to joining the firm, Emily spent four years as a Vice President and Investment Manager at Columbus Nova Partners, a private investment management firm with over $1.5 billion under management. At Columbus Nova, she was responsible for sourcing and executing principal transactions for the Columbus Nova Opportunity Fund, a $500 million credit opportunity fund. In addition, she served as the co-founder and COO of COVA Capital, a specialty finance fund. Prior to Columbus Nova, Emily served as Vice President and Investment Manager at Sirrom Capital, where she made investments in the software, service, retail and manufacturing sectors. Emily previously spent two years in Strategic Development and as an Assistant to the Founder / CEO of a publicly traded restaurant chain. She also spent significant time in operating roles at two internet service businesses. At the beginning of her career, Emily was a Financial Analyst in Corporate Finance at Montgomery Securities.
Emily received an A.B. with highest honors from Stanford University and an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School. She currently serves as Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the non-profit, Kesem, a nationwide community that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. A native San Franciscan and huge sports fan (top billing goes to SF 49ers, SF Giants, Golden State Warriors, Stanford football, UK basketball), Emily lives in San Francisco with her three kids and their dog, Teddy.
Justin Nyweide is a Founding Partner and member of the Investment Committee since inception. Prior to HMI Capital, Justin served as a Principal at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) – Fixed Income, a $12+ billion credit-focused investment affiliate of KKR based in San Francisco. Prior to KKR, Justin worked at GTCR Golder Rauner, an $8+ billion private equity firm based in Chicago. He began his career in Leveraged Finance at Wachovia Securities.
Justin received an A.B. with Honors from Harvard University and competed for both the varsity swimming and varsity baseball teams. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and is a member of the Finance Committee of The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), a nonprofit based in Berkeley, CA. Originally from Chicago and a former San Franciscan, Justin now lives in Boston with his wife and three children.
Sean Barrett is a Partner and member of the Investment Committee. Since joining HMI in early 2010, Sean has been instrumental in many of the firm’s investments across financial services, internet and software. Since 2012, Sean has led HMI’s efforts in financial services, including investments in The Charles Schwab Corp., LPL Financial Holdings, Apollo Global Management, The Blackstone Group and Avanza Bank Holding AB (Sweden). Sean has also led or managed many of the firm’s internet and media investments, including Ströer (Germany), comScore and oOh!media (Australia).
Prior to joining the firm in early 2010, Sean was an Associate and founding member of REGAL Capital Advisors, a boutique investment bank focused on M&A and capital raising initiatives. Prior to REGAL, Sean was an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division of Credit Suisse, where he focused on Sponsors and Leveraged Finance transactions.
Mr. Barrett earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Finance and Legal Studies. While there, he also served as Captain of the varsity golf team. Currently, Sean is a member of the board of the University of Pennsylvania Golf Team and serves as the Treasurer of the young professionals auxiliary board of the Holy Family Day Home, a nonprofit based in San Francisco. Originally from Los Angeles, Sean now lives in San Francisco with his wife, Natalie.
RK Mahendran is a Partner and member of the Investment Committee. Prior to joining the firm, RK was an Associate at Thomas H. Lee Partners, a Boston-based private equity fund, where he focused on investments in the software, information services, and media sectors. Prior to THL, RK was an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs, where he focused on the oil and gas sector.
Mr. Mahendran graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance with Honors from The University of Texas at Austin. Currently, RK serves on the Board of the San Francisco Education Fund, a non-profit focused on supporting students and educators across San Francisco public schools. An avid traveler, RK is working towards visiting all seven continents. Originally from Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Mr. Mahendran now lives in San Francisco.
Jonathan is a Partner and the Chief Financial Officer at HMI. Prior to joining the firm in mid-2015, Jonathan was the Controller for HoldCo Asset Management, LP, a small, New York-based private equity firm which he joined at inception. During his time at HoldCo, Jonathan led the financial reporting and tax functions as well as the operations and investor relations areas. Prior to HoldCo, Jonathan served as a Manager in the Financial Services Audit Group in New York for Ernst & Young where he led audit engagements for several $12B+ hedge funds.
Mr. Wu is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.
Originally hailing from Maryland, Jonathan now lives in San Francisco with his wife and their dog, Tegan.
Jeff Hau is a Director and member of the Investment Team at HMI. Prior to joining HMI Capital, Jeff was an Investment Professional at Route One Investment Company (“Route One”), a San Francisco-based investment firm. At Route One, Jeff worked on equity and credit investments across multiple industries in both developed and emerging markets. Prior to Route One, Jeff was an investment banking analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group at J.P. Morgan. While Jeff enjoys working in an office environment, his natural habitat is in the kitchen of his parents’ restaurant, where he earned his first paycheck growing up.
Jeff received a B.A. in Economics Cum Laude with Distinction from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
Originally from New Jersey, Jeff now lives in San Francisco with his fiancée, Alison.
Jamie Cruickshank is an Analyst and member of the Investment Team at HMI. Prior to joining the firm, Jamie was an Analyst at Silver Lake Partners, a private equity firm focused on investments in large-cap technology and tech-enabled businesses.
Jamie received a B.A. in Honors Business Administration with Distinction from Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario, where he held leadership roles with several student-run organizations. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Jamie now lives in San Francisco.
Ally is the Executive Assistant and Office Manager and has been with HMI since 2012. Prior to joining the firm, Ally was an executive assistant at BlackRock, a global asset management firm with $3.6 trillion under management. Ally was in the iShares division, supporting the Global Head of Investment Research for exchange-traded funds (ETFs). During her tenure there, Ally supported a team that grew rapidly in size, expanding to Asia and Europe. Ally came with seven years of industry experience in administrative support and operations.
Ally earned a Bachelor of Art degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Ally came to San Francisco during her high school years and is originally from Hong Kong. She not only manages the office but is also the unofficial HMI bodyguard, being a diligent martial arts student in Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Marilyn Chin is an Executive Assistant and Office Manager at HMI. Prior to joining HMI, Marilyn supported the General Counsel and Legal Team at Farallon Capital Management, L.L.C. for 13 years before taking a sabbatical. During this time, Marilyn travelled, illustrated a children’s book and mastered the art of baking sourdough bread.
Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Marilyn graduated from Langara Art College and worked as graphic artist in advertising. Marilyn lives in San Francisco with her husband and is an avid hockey fan.
